Q. Can I do the program part-time?
A. The program is designed for busy professionals in Central Iowa. All courses are offered in the evening or on weekends.
Q. How long will it take?
A. The MCL is a 36-hour program. If you take two courses a semester, as most students do, you can finish it in two years, including summers.
Q. What makes the MCL different from an MBA or an MPA?
A. It is a unique combination of communications and business courses, offering students a practical approach to managing the message and leading a staff or organization in a constantly changing media environment.
Q. But how can it help my career?
A. Courses in the MCL are designed to help you determine your personal strengths and weaknesses and use that knowledge to plan a career path that suits your strengths but helps you overcome your weaknesses. It can help move your career into exciting new, meaningful, and fulfilling directions.
Q. What types of people are in the program?
A. We appeal to professionals with backgrounds in advertising, public relations, marketing, and newspaper, magazine, and broadcast journalism. Our students are from corporate, government and not-for-profit environments as well as communication agencies. They all have professional experience.
Q. How have students’ careers changed after completing the program?
A. Some students have changed their jobs, moving into leadership positions they had not considered before enrolling in the MCL. Others have changed the way they handle their current position, becoming more introspective and finding more rewards in their work. Still others have found leadership opportunities in community work.
Q. What are the admissions requirements?
A. We require the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), but will also accept the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT); a 3-5-page essay; official college transcripts; professional resume; and three letters of recommendation.
