Magazine Media

Starting in Fall 2015

Program Overview

You’ll learn how to write effective articles that inform and inspire, to act ethically, to identify the needs of an audience, and to deliver reliable information in the format that best serves those needs. In addition to becoming a better writer, you’ll also learn to communicate using video, audio, photography, social media, and mobile apps. Magazine Media majors are critical thinkers and problem solvers.

You can be a writer, editor, or designer for a magazine, in print or on the web. You can be in publication management or marketing, social media strategy or mobile application development, in communications for a corporation, educational institution, or nonprofit.

Magazine Media Faculty

Assistant Professor Jeff Inman is a longtime freelance entertainment writer for such publications as Las Vegas CityLife, Rolling Stone and Billboard.

Associate Professor Catherine M. Staub, Ed.D., is the Fisher-Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism. Staub is the founder and CEO of Lexicon Content Marketing, and has held jobs at Meredith Corporation and Wells Fargo.

Magazine Media Organizations

There is a nationally recognized student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Students also can work on the award-winning campus publications: The Times-Delphic, Drake Magazine, The Annual, and Drake Broadcasting System radio and TV stations. SJMC students frequently do communications work for University Communications and Drake Athletics, and are active in student government and residence life.

Magazine Media Internships

We’ll help you identify internships on campus and in the local market — as well as in the industry’s top markets — that can jump-start your career while you’re still a student.

Magazine powerhouse Meredith Corporation, with headquarters in Des Moines, offers an apprenticeship program for Drake Magazine Media majors. And our powerful alumni network helps students land summer internships in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and beyond. Students have worked at Texas Monthly, Paste, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, New York magazine, Greater Des Moines Partnership, Principal Financial Group, Beautiful Savage Magazine, Seventeen, GQ, Good Housekeeping, Vitae Design Collective, Marie Claire, Missouri Coalition for the Environment and Indianapolis Monthly, among others.

With our own internship coordinator, we’ll help you find the right job.
