Digital Media Production

Starting in Fall 2015

Program Overview

You’ll develop the skills to use a multimedia palette of video, audio, still photography and text across a variety of platforms, including broadcast video and audio, web, tablets and smart phones. From concept through distribution, you’ll learn every aspect of the digital media production industry.

You can be a multimedia storyteller, a skilled digital media producer for television, radio, websites, sports networks, commercials, documentary, films, or corporate communication.

Digital Media Production Faculty

Professor Todd Evans has been at Drake since 1984. He served seven years as director of the Drake Telemedia Center, where he was responsible for the campus’ 24-hour cable access channel, live studio production supervision and live remote television production.

Associate Professor David Wright’s professional background is in video sports production, and he is still works closely with Drake Athletics to support video production at the Knapp Center and Drake Stadium, multimedia content for the Athletic Department website, and national television coverage of athletic events hosted by Drake.

Digital Media Production Organizations

The Drake Broadcasting System includes a low-power FM radio station, KDRA 94.1 The Dog. Drake students’ annual coverage of the Drake Relays is the nation’s oldest, biggest student-run production. There is a nationally recognized chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Students can produce professional sports content for ESPN3. Students also work on the award-winning campus publications: The Times-Delphic and Drake Magazine, in print and online. SJMC students frequently do photography and video work for University Communications and Drake Athletics, and are active in student government and residence life.

Digital Media Production Internships

We’ll help you identify internships locally —and in the industry’s top markets  — that can jump-start your career while you’re still a student. Drake students have found internships in organizations and companies such as MidAmerican Energy; ESPN; Meredith Corp. digital operations; Cleveland Cavaliers; Clear Channel Communications; the Iowa Cubs, Iowa Barnstormers and Des Moines Menace; The Des Moines Register; USATF Outdoor Championships; WHO-TV, KCCI-TV and WOI-TV in Des Moines; national networks in New York and Washington, D.C.; NBCSN; St. Louis PBS and Minnesota and Iowa NPR stations; the Iowa Speedway and Prairie Meadows racetrack, just to name a few. With our own internship coordinator, we’ll help you find the right job.
